Hello, my name is Billy Lombardo, and I’m a writer, teacher, editor, and the co-founder, along with StoryStudio Chicago of Stet, the Magazine (stetmagazine.org), a new, student-run international literary magazine for high school writers and editors.

We were founded on the strength of the belief that the collaboration between young writers and editors can be profoundly valuable for everyone involved. Every submission at Stet, the Magazine is read closely by multiple student editors who offer line-by-line and developmental commentary on every piece, whether it’s accepted for publication or not. And our editors provide each other feedback on their editorial commentary.

When writers are read carefully by thoughtful and generous editors, are encouraged to consider editorial suggestions, to revise where they feel it’s appropriate, and to put their dukes up for the non-negotiables, their work will be stronger for the collaboration. The goal is not just publication, but growth and development on both sides of the creative exchange.

We’re reaching out to you for two reasons:

  • Share with your writers: Please share our site (stetmagazine.org) with your students and colleagues. While our website is in its early stages, we are officially open for submissions in poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and visual art. We have opportunities, as well, for analytical writers.
  • Recommend student editors: We are building an international editorial board of exceptional high school editors. If you have literary standouts—editors of your school literary magazine, newspaper, or yearbook—advanced writers, or voracious readers—please encourage them to apply. They will receive training, mentorship, and global editorial experience. Note: To protect student privacy, we do not collect student contact info from you—we will provide an invitation link for you to pass along directly to your standouts.)

My background as a teacher, writer, and the founder/long-time managing editor of Polyphony Lit has convinced me of the profound value of this work. and I know there are students in your classrooms for whom Stet will be a transformative creative outlet.

Interested students can reach us at info@stetmagazine.org.

I know how much care and commitment goes into teaching high school English. I hope you’ll consider allowing Stet, the Magazine to be resource for your students and your program.

Warmly,
billy lombardo
