stet, the magazine → about us
Our magazine is for and by high school writers. The submitted pieces are read, reviewed, and discussed amongst an editorial team of high school students, with supervision and guidance from Billy Lombardo. The goal is to create a space where the work is written, edited, and published by a group of young writers. Writing from all over the globe is welcomed.
At stet every submission is read closely and taken seriously by multiple editors who are taught not to correct, to evaluate, or to grade a voice, but to listen for it, to articulate how it’s behaving, to ask what the piece is trying to become, and to consider how it might get there. And every author, whether their piece is accepted or not, receives a response with thoughtful, line-by-line and developmental commentary.

about our name…
Stet is a Latin word (meaning “let it stand”) used in editing to indicate that a previously marked change should be ignored. In other words, if the author does not want a particular edit, they can choose to keep their original work. Our name hints at that process: writers and editors are encouraged to read and reread, to engage and re-engage with the work thoughtfully and with an eye toward understanding the work on the page as deeply as possible.
And writers are encouraged to revise, to test suggestions, to put their dukes up for what they believe, and to decide, ultimately, what belongs in their work.In the end, what the poem, the story, the essay becomes—what the author lets stand—will be the deliberate and considered result of a writer in partnership with peers they trust as readers and editors. At stet, the magazine, that’s our reason for being.
